ActivePrint 7.5 Released for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. What’s New?
We’re very excited to announce the release of ActivePrint 7.5 for your iOS devices! This latest version has only been on the AppStore for a couple of weeks, and it’s already been a great success. Here are some of the new features:
- Support for printing documents and files from your Box.net Cloud Account. Now you can choose Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets, PowerPoint Presentations, PDF Files, and more in your Box.net account to be printed. Sign up for a free Box.net account at http://www.box.net.
- Full iOS 4 Support. Many of you have heard about the new iPhone 4 coming out. Some may have even done pre-orders to get one to replace your current iPhone. Whenever you decide to upgrade, know that ActivePrint is completely compatible with iOS 4. And we’ve also added support for multitasking so that you can send your documents to be printed and send it to the background when sending particularly large files to be printed. So no need to wait for the document to finish being sent to the printer if you have an iOS 4 device that supports multitasking.
- Progress bar for when you’re sending print jobs. Another great feature when you’re sending large files to be printed. Now you can watch the file go to your printer as its happening.
- New Welcome screen. This was a design change that was recommended by one of the increasingly active ActivePrint Community. Instead of that long welcome message when you first launch ActivePrint on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll see instead a series of large buttons that simply ask “What do you want to print today?” This is to make printing on the go easier and faster for you.
- Two available downloads on the AppStore, a Pro and Lite version. A couple of months ago we added InApp Purchase to ActivePrint to let users try out ActivePrint for free before buying the full version. We remain the only printing solution for the iPhone and the iPad that does this. However, we still got requests for a version that would allow users to download a full license to all of their iOS devices and not have to purchase a new license for each one. So we’ve added ActivePrint Pro which uses the traditional approach where customers buy the app on the AppStore and then download it to each of the devices in their iTunes Account. But we have kept our Lite version that uses a try-before you buy model.
What’s Next with ActivePrint 7.6?
So that’s ActivePrint 7.5. Now to give you glimpse into what is coming with ActivePrint 7.6. Here are some of the features you can expect with the next free update to ActivePrint:
- Support for printing documents from your Google Docs and Dropbox accounts.
- Mac support for the ActivePrint System Server.
- Simplified Cloud Printing.
Updates for ActivePrint System Server
We’ve added some minor updates to the ActivePrint System Server that everyone should go take advantage of. These updates are mostly improved performance compatibility. You can download it at http://www.activeprint.net.

Yesterday Apple unveiled their latest creation, the iPad. It’s a tablet device that is basically a giant iPhone or iPod Touch. One of the best features is that virtually all iPhone and iPod Touch Apps are compatible as is with the new iPad! Which means the current version of ActivePrint for the iPhone is already compatible with this new and exciting device.
However, there are several features that are going to be made available to app developers that we will be adding to ActivePrint. Currently, we’re under a nondisclosure agreement with Apple and cannot disclose what these new features are. However, they are features that are going to make ActivePrint a must have app for printing from your iPad.
Keep watch on the ActivePrint site for news regarding these features.

The release of ActivePrint for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch has been a great success thus far! I’ve received a great deal of positive feedback and great questions from new users.
Here are some of the more common questions I have received:
- Q:You have support for Windows PC’s, but what about Mac OSX?
- A: We are currently working on adding support for Mac OSX. We plan to have development for this complete by Summer 2010. If you would like to be notified when this support is added, sign up to receive a notification by email at http://www.activeprint.net/sign-up-for-announcements/
- Q: Why can’t I print notes from the Notes App that comes with my iPhone/iPod Touch?
- Apple does not allow developers access to the Notes App in the apps that developers create. However, you can use Copy/Paste from Apple’s Notes App into ActivePrint. This can be done with any other text that you copy in other Apps as well.
